I felt oddly serene considering I was laying on a device that retails for $160,000. As I allowed by body to relax into the Ammortal Chamber‘s bed of thermally-insulated acrylic, I just kept thinking, ‘I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life.’ In the 10 years I’ve worked at Popsugar, I’ve tested plenty of wellness gadgetsbut this was by far the most expensive (and unconventional!). Described nebulously by the brand as “a human optimization device” for longevity and performance, the Ammortal Chamber is often used by pro athletes (like the Denver Broncos) and biohackers alike. But I’d call it something simpler: the ultimate reset machine.

Whether your muscles need recovery after a workout or your mind feels overstimulated from a weekend of parenting — or in my case, both — the Ammortal Chamber offers a healing reprieve. Keep reading to learn about my experience testing out the Ammortal Chamber at the Recovery Suite at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel.

What Is the Ammortal Chamber?

The Ammortal Chamber is a holistic wellness device that combines treatments including red light therapymolecular hydrogen (delivered through a nasal cannula), PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic fields), and vibroacoustic sound therapy. While these non-invasive technologies may sound like pseudo-science, each of these therapies has been researched. PEMF, which uses short duration electrical pulses, has been studied to promote enhanced recoveryas has red light therapy and vibroacoustic stimulation. While the molecular hydrogen offers potential antioxidant effects.

What Was the Ammortal Chamber Like?

Located in a recovery suite at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel, the chamber is the centerpiece. My first thought was that it looked like a medical examination table in an Apple store. I felt uneasy being in alone in a room with this sculptural device worth over $100,000. Immediately I did a quick search to see if there was anything I could accidentally break on the machine, but there’s really just the bed and a touchscreen panel to control it. The design of the bed is based on NASA’s zero gravity body positioning. Rather than lying flat, there are bends at the hips and knees.

To start, I stripped down to my swimsuit and prepared for my session. On the touchscreen, I selected “recover” from the journey options that include: energize, reconnect, and release. There weren’t descriptions of the experiences on the screen. From a design perspective, this kept the display aesthetically clean, but it would have been nice to know more about the offerings.

Next up, I inserted the nasal cannula to receive the hydrogen oxygen and put on goggles to protect my eyes from the red light. The guide prompted me to set an intention and alerted me that red lights would soon turn on, the lid would lower, and my session would begin. The top of the chamber lowered down and stopped about a foot above me. It was high enough that I didn’t have any feelings of claustrophobia. I’ve tried an infrared LED bed before which made me feel trapped, so the expansiveness was refreshing.

Calming spa music played and I felt my body start to relax. The PEM felt very mild, like a slight tingling sensation. I often get tense during massages and in comparison, the almost imperceptible feeling of these treatments allowed me to melt into a tranquil state. The red light was warm, but not sweltering like a sauna. It was as if I was in a comfortable cocoon. It felt like both nothing and everything was happening. The session concluded with the guide instructing me to “slowly and gently come back to my body” and to “notice how I was feeling.”

I don’t want to sound too new-agey, but I felt like my nervous system had been reset. It was as if a large exhale that had been waiting to leave my body had finally been released. I entered the rest of the day feeling rejuvenated. I tackled items on my to-do list, took my dog on a two-mile walk, and didn’t need an afternoon tea for energy. The next few days, I was more calm and present, like I had taken a short vacation. The brand claims that 90 percent of users experience feelings of “caffeinated calm” and this was exactly how I felt. I was mellow yet alert, serene, even.

Final Thoughts

Clearly, I was impressed. But there are a few things worth mentioning. For starters, the brand emphasizes that the Ammortal Chamber is used by professional athletes to help to reduce muscle soreness. I’d completed a long marathon-training run that morning before treatment, but my legs didn’t feel dramatically different than they normally do. I’m curious to try it again after an upcoming 19-mile run when I know my body will be extremely sore to see how it aids in recovery. My second note is on the price. With the cost being nearly $160,000, purchasing the Ammortal Chamber is likely limited to elite biohackers and professional athletes.

That said, you can test it out for a session at a time at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel. Sessions last 15 to 60 minutes and are also available in clinics in North America including HealEastWest in Manhattan Beach, BioHack Spa in Cabo San Lucas, and The Infinity Club in New Jersey. At The Proper, a session costs $125 for a 25 minute session or $195 for a 50 minute session, so it’s still an investment. I’d consider going again when I felt out of sorts and my normal (and free) self-care practices weren’t cutting it. I could also see myself coming back after an international trip when I need to reset or during an exceptionally busy work season where I needed something to keep me focused and calm. Ultimately, the Ammortal Chamber is a treat (both physically and financially). I wouldn’t use it often, but I’d definitely go back again.
